Alabama holds 23rd place in the United States in terms of population of nearly five million people. The state capital is Montgomery (during the Civil War (1861-1865) Montgomery was the capital of the rebel states from February 4 to May 29, 1861). The largest cities are Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville.
